My name is Rareș Ionașcu. I am an artist and iconographer from Romania. I've studied in Nicolae Tonitza Fine Art High-school, Bucharest University of Art and University of Theology – Sacred Art. As an artist I specialize in Iconography, Water Gilding, miniatures, historical illustration, calligraphy and cartography.
So far I've completed many Icon projects for churches and monasteries in many countries, and also for exhibitions. Besides the sacral art I also paint historical maps, world maps, historical events, reconstitutions of historical artifacts and places and illustrate Historical Books. Amongst the others I have illustrated 2 bestseller books; one in Romania and one in Luxembourg.
For the past few years besides my art vocation I began to give art classes to a large number of students around the world.

You will learn the basics of what water gilding is, make your first steps through the history of this technique as I will be introducing you to water gilding step by step. I will share with you the knowledge about the origins of this technique, the materials to be used as well as those to avoid. We will start the process of sanding and the process of polishing. You will learn about the types of sand paper, the difference between them, how to choose the right ones and which sorts of sand papers to avoid. We will talk about types of water gilding, brands, and the differences between them. Starting day 1 You will begin to prepare the surface for water gilding and apply bolus on the board.
I will tell you about the recipes, and the process of preparing the ingredients. We will talk about all the materials used in our recipe and the role of each and every component. You will also learn to tell the types of gold and the thickness of gold leaf. You will learn how to define gold and how not to be fooled. We will talk about brands you can trust and also learn about the differences between single layer gold, double gold and triple layer gold. How to define the number of karats as well as understand what karat means, how to calculate the amount of gold needed for a large surface.
The agate stone: types, shapes, how to choose the proper stone for different tasks, how to properly use agate stone. Which one is good for you and why, and which types are bad and why.
Types of suedes, how to choose the proper suede, and how to check the differences between natural and synthetic. What is the role of suede in water gilding.
Start water gilding. This day we will be talking about each and every problem of gilding as we are facing it in practice. I will help you to solve problems and guide you to solutions. You will learn the tips and tricks for each situation while we are practicing. There will be many situations where this technique will surprise you with failures and make you desperate. I will be there to help understand what needs to be done.
